"Energy Saving Day is every day of the year!" Said school-SPARE Central Federal District of Russia”

Energy Saving Day -2015 was a big event for schools, families and entire neighborhoods of the Central Federal District of Russia. This year’s event recorded a great success with many practical projects, special events and educational programs that covered more than 200 schools in 7 provinces of the region. It has exceptionally been an engaging one for students, teachers and parents as through their efforts and the use of simple and innovative materials like processing metal and paper many residential and school areas were insulated and this strategy has  helped to save energy and water resources.

SPARE program is aimed at encouraging participatory programs that would involve schools and the families and this has truly paid off as as we now have a lot of people practicing and adopting different forms of energy conservation and energy efficiency in their various neighborhoods. So in a way, SPARE program has been successful at actively engaging citizens of Russia in energy conservation practices. This process however ensures sustainable development at large with a lot of emphasis on the well-being of the younger generation, and consequently providing a means of support for families as the world faces a growing energy and environmental problems.


The annual energy saving day has indeed become a new impetus to the expansion of SPARE activities. The energy saving day for year 2015 came up on the 11th of November and which saw the participation of students, teachers, parents to being involved in activities such as the insulation of rooms to help out during the winter cold, lamp and glass clean out, installation of energy-saving sensors, awareness on water-saving tips, and provision of tools for automatic closing doors.
Due to the rising need for information reach as regards innovative opportunities for energy and water conservation by many of the new school-SPARE in the Bryansk, Kaluga, Yaroslavl and Smolensk regions, SPARE has organized trainings, seminar workshops with the support of Methodists Bryansk, regional NGO "Viola"(the coordinating organization of the program "Environmental education" RSEU) and students (former students - participants of the SPARE program). Additionally, the initiative has helped families to participate in an online training program tagged “Through the game to action!".  Notably, Online and desktop games training packages have been developed by the members of the SPARE community for the past 10 years.

At this year’s event, more than 200 families formed active groups that created their own practical innovations for energy conservation and participated in posters and photos competitions. To provide further learning support, teachers of foreign languages were available to ​​helps students conduct lessons on energy saving using the books and materials from the web in English and  many of the ideas and contributions of energy-use monitoring by students helped to assess the performance of the annual school projects as instituted by the SPARE program.
Finally, Energy Conservation Day in our region began on November 1 and continues into December and the innovative and practical steps adopted have interested students so much that they offered to carry out energy-saving day every day of the year.
