Humanity, Still Far from Absolute civilization if we can’t Move Past Our Dependence on Fossil Fuel.
MMan's naturally inclined and continuous quest for absolute control and domination of his natural environment has for a while now induced a transformation that has seen the world changed and entreated as almost the manipulated creation of man.
From being the most vulnerable life form on earth, the highly competitive environment we formed a part of drove us to reason beyond the limits of our supposedly capacity into a the new age of sophistication. From primary cavemen tools we evolved on a gradual scale and yet the growth was healthy, then we birthed the industrial age of manufacturing revolution that saw man at the peak of his ingenuity.
Overnight, the world took a turn of advancement and gradually
the dream of absolute domination became feasible, man was no longer at
the mercy of his environment to some extent though it took a while to
overcome some stubborn diseases but still, the era marked the beginning
of the golden age for humanity. There was a population explosion,
living standard improved; urbanization took the reins of affairs and
indeed a time to be proud of humanity’s advancement.
Steam power became a wonder, but then we needed more and we had
to dig the earth for coal. Then men realized that coal required much
less energy to mine than cutting wood and coal was more abundant than
wood. The beginning of our woes I’d say though, but yet we overjoyed at
the discovery of the yet in the future problem, hence the advent of
the menace of major anthropogenic green house gases emissions on planet
Earth.
Increase in the demand for energy doubled and more sources would
have to be located. Then crude oil came to light and almost like a
runner up feat, the invention of internal combustion engine and its use
in automobiles and trucks which greatly increased the demand for
petroleum products.
Hence, another era of advancement which has seen humanity heavily dependent on fossil fuel and its many accompanied benefits.
Now a considerable percentage of our energy reliance facilities are heavily dependent on fossil fuel energy.
For over 300 years man has been stuck at a point in the history
of our advancement with our sole reliance on the continuous adoption of
fossil fuel as our primary source of energy. Overtime we have been
able to overcome major threats to our continuous survival by the
numerous feats of achievement our insatiable quest for improvement and
comfort has afforded us but yet here we are still stuck at point for
over three centuries with fossil fuel.
Well there seem like a thousand and one questions to ask at this
point and probably the equal magnitude of answers would be required
but as the world stands today, evasive in attitude and contented in the
wise of the obvious trend we might wait forever to get the logical
answers.
But it gets to be more obvious the reasons for this lackluster
attitude of ours, the blame cannot be considered total as just a few
controls the market and the rest are just the onlookers who dances to
the tune of the self made cabals who are ready to set man aback in his
continuous quest for perfection.
The world has built its wealth around oil and the vast of the
influence surrounds the control all over the world. The developing
world, not so exclusive in the obvious game of oil dependency have
totally destroyed their very fragile environment for the continuous
exploration of this source of energy. Taking a cue from Nigeria, where
the total revenue generation avenue is the earthen oil reserves, it has
become a normal sight to see a disorganized and disrupted environment
in the Niger Delta and the continuous menace of gas flaring. Then the
unequal distribution of the supposedly oil wealth which has ended up
creating social divisions among the masses. Hence, issues of civil
unrest all over the country. So in a way fossil fuel has not just
resulted into a big factor in the wise of environmental problems but
also an influence in social-economic injustice
The world looks towards a zero net emission future, where fossil
fuel use will be completely phased out and substituted with the
adoption of renewable energy sources.
A clean future deserves the cleanest form of energy. That is
what I call a healthy and sustainable advancement which does not just
see to the immediate benefits but looks ahead into future such that
today’s innovation wouldn’t be a terminator of tomorrow.
The question is what it would cost the world to take another
step of advancing our nature as humanity. This big step of evolution
can only be taken together such that we wouldn’t leave some little feet
behind.
As the world looks towards a concrete agreement in Paris come
2015, our governments needs to see reasons to improve on their
commitments, the Annex1 countries needs to live up to expectation, the
reluctance of improving mitigation and adaptation finances needs to be
addressed, technology transfer is another issue of concern while we
cannot still accept the empty promises of emission cuts and un
implemented policy framework , the need for a unilateral and unanimous
agreement is needed in 2015 to assure our seriousness of saving the
future now. Also the developing countries wouldn’t do well in waiting
forever on the developed countries, we need to act now within the
capacities we are well capable of handling and work a way around
balancing our developmental strategy in the wise of sustaining our
fragile environment. We need to start teaching ourselves the honest
truth of choices in the midst of few options.
We need to stand as the world now and not behind the walls of
our differences; our planet needs us as much as we need her. So let’s
work on making it work this time around.
Sincerely Yours Earthly.
